The Odyssey DVD Player looks impressive enough. It has slick and intuitive user interface
and gives a good first impression. However, the moment i tried to play a DVD in it,
it crashed on the spot. This was a bit strange as usually most DVD players run fine
on my system. At a glance, nothing seems wrong with this player, but after browsing
through the installation directory, a few weird things showed up. Firstly,
the DirectShow filters (decoding engine) provided with the player seemed like some sort of Microsoft
sample filters. Secondly, the microsoft filter test program (GraphEdit) is also
found in the installation directory.
This all seemed a little "too weird". The Odyssey player doesn't seem to be a DVD
Player at all. What it does seem to be is a collection of Microsoft sample code
wrapped up in a new user interface. I wouldn't even rank this software as a DVD Player,
more likely just an unstable DVD Front end, similar to the one supplied by Microsoft.
While i may be wrong on this, i think I'll leave it for you to decide.
